Microsoft was in a bit of a rough spot after its poor E3 showing. Its message of an always online future was not clearly explained to consumers which led many to cancel their Xbox One pre-orders, and some to switch to the PS4. This was compounded by the awful PR strategy that Microsoft employees found themselves implementing, like telling soldiers and those without internet to stick with the 360 instead of purchasing the new console.
